EL PASO – Recently, members of the Ex-Marfa Shorthorns and Friends met to determine top objectives for this year’s initiatives.

The meeting, facilitated by Mando Uranga, decided to award two scholarships for students from Marfa High School and to have a family picnic. Two scholarships, $2,000 each, will be awarded to one girl and one boy. The funds will be provided for distribution in May.

The family picnic will be held June 9, from 12-4pm at the military base at Biggs Field in El Paso. For the picnic, Ex-Shorthorns and friends are invited and are welcome to bring their kids and grandkids. The park is set up with a pavilion, big shade trees, a kids’ water park, paint ball equipment, plus other teenage and adult games such as horseshoes and basketball.

The picnic is free. Just bring a side dish per family and your own drinks, no glass bottles. It will be helpful to bring lawn chairs as well.

The planning committee for the Ex-Marfa Shorthorns and Friends are grateful to so many loyal alma mater, fans, and to organizations that have been supportive of every scholarship fund drive that we have held.

The committee feels it appropriate to name the Marfa Chamber of Commerce; the Big Bend Sentinel; Joe Olivas owner of R&J Printing; Coach Tito Valdez; State Senator Jose Rodriquez; and Congressman Pete Gallegos for their significant in-kind and monetary contributions.

Because of these individuals, we are able to continue our work in making a positive difference in the lives of the graduates from Marfa High School. Please call one of the following individuals to give the number of persons you will bring to the picnic: Delma Sotelo, 915-772-9071; Elodia Contreras, 915-474-2431; Yolanda Uranga, 915-584-5179; or Minga Minjarez, 915 591-9739.
